The Nubian Artist

Mohamed Mounir is an Egyptian artist born in Aswan on October 10, 1954. He started singing at an early age in his little town. He attended every ceremony or gathering just for the pleasure and passion he had for singing. He obtained a Bachelor Degree in cinematography from the university of Helwan. He started his career with his spiritual father, the famous composer Ahmed Mounib who trained him on Nubian rhythms and style. Mohamed Mounir released his first album in 1977.

It was entitled ‘Aleemouni Ayneeki’. It was very successful. This success encouraged the production company to go on another record deal with him. As an artist with a unique style and identity, Mohamed Mounir is best known for his mingling of jazz music with Nubian music rhythms. His deep lyrics with a philosophical content and for their social and political commentary, his peculiar style of performance on the stage, and his odd appearance that goes beyond the usual look of artists made him unique.

He released several albums such as “Bnetweled” in 1979, “Shababek” in 1981, “Etakalemy” in 1983, and “Meshwar” in 1991, “Momken” in 1995, “Ahmar Shafaief” in 2003, and ‘Taam El Biyout” in 2008. Mounir acted in several movies such as ’Hadouta Massereya’ in 1982 ,and ‘Almassir’in 1997 – both of which were directed by Youssef Chahine, and “Dunia” in 2005. Briefly, the southern boy has become one of the best admired artistic contemporary figures in Egypt.
